Meet Pick, Narrator of The Arroyo

I’m Pick, the story of The Arroyo is told through me. You might think Pick is a funny name but in the time and place I'm from, last names are superfluous.  Some of the older generation still uses them being from a different world that existed before the tri-pocalypse. That's the world you know. It ended. The movies, where everything goes south on a very bad Thursday afternoon were not right. The end took place over a decade or so. There were three things, not one. A deadly virus,  a nuclear war that spun out of control and the coup de gras, a super volcano blew in the northwest ended civilization as you know it. Myself, and some others you will meet in this book, are the first generation to grow up in this new world. Everyday things you take for granted, like money, shopping and basic societal stability are gone. Some things remain; family, friendship, loyalty, determination and hope for a better tomorrow remain.

This is a story of movement. We are always on the move in search of a better place, adventures and more understanding of the human condition. I start off alone only to be found near death by a young woman named Blue Raven. She dreams of a better future in freedom. We head south across the frozen wastelands of the former USA. Later we meet Captain Ugo Santee and his ship The Arroyo,  an old sail and diesel powered smuggling vessel. When Blue Raven’s dreams are crushed, Captain Ugo invites us to join him on the open ocean moving people and goods. We are also joined with Akimi, Captain Ugo’s long lost daughter. Our first passengers are a family of three many thousands of miles from home. The father, Abdul, hires us to take them home almost half a world away. This is our story.
