Bulgarian Adventure Talk Thoughts

Paul and Kato

It was a good turnout this past Tuesday, I met some great people and go some good feedback. The idea of immigration came up as far as learning about learning a new culture, being in a new and unfamiliar environment and overcoming our own stereotypes. It is an area I could explore more with others as I give this and other talks.

The theme of accessibility came up as well, Here accessibility is in the law but in my experience too many places meet the requirements following the letter of the law while remaining inaccessible. I plan a picture project in the next month or two to demonstrate what I mean. Bulgaria has no ADA and I had to rely on others for help when I needed it. In my case the help was always there when needed. Honestly, I don't know how it would be for handicapped Bulgarians I'd rather be in a society where getting help when needed is from my fellow citizens is never a problem than one that wants to fix the problems and barriers faced by the so called disabled via laws only. Overall, I'd say Americans are great helpers when asked (and sometimes when not). But too many disabled / handicapped people are left with too little education and condemned to a life of poverty.

I'm writing these talks as I schedule them and know I need to practice more. I hope to get to the point I don't even need to bring notes or an outline. Practice Practice and more practice!

Thanks for the encouragement.

-Paul
